ENMU Writers’ Retreat 2015 (Portugal)

ENMU Writers’ Retreat and DISQUIET International are pleased to announce this year’s Lisbon writing workshops. They will take place June 28 to July 10, 2015. Please join us and many of the finest North American and Portuguese writers in Portugal this summer.

2015 Faculty include Mary Gaitskill, Eileen Myles, Sally Ashton, Elaine Avila, Jordan Bass (executive editor, McSweeney’s), David Caplan, Alexander Chee, Erica Dawson, Arthur Flowers, John Frey, Noy Holland, Mikhail Iossel, Leslie Jamison, Cyriaco Lopes, Catherine Tice (associate publisher, The New York Review of Books), Stephanie Timm, Terri Witek. Portuguese writers include Teolinda Gersão, José Luís Peixoto, Jacinto Lucas Pires, Patrícia Portela, Patrícia Reis, Gonçalo M. Tavares, and many more TBA.


The 2015 program will include core workshops in poetry, fiction, memoir & nonfiction, and playwriting, with afternoon workshops on a variety of subjects, including experimental poetry and Portuguese culture. There will also be literary walks, day trips, craft talks with leading editors, manuscript consultations, and readings with North American and Portuguese writers, in one of the world’s most unforgettable cities.

ENMU Writers’ Retreat (Lisboa, Portugal)

To all those who’d like to attend our Writers’ Retreat in Lisbon, Portugal. Starting now, we’ll be accepting submissions for the Ruidoso Casino and Racetrack stipend in the amount of $500. Please send ten pages of prose (fiction or non-fiction), or three poems to ENMU Writers’ Retreat, Station 19, 1500 S. Ave K, Portales, NM 88130. The deadline is April 15, 2015. All applicants to the retreat qualify.


According to the CIA World Factbook, Portugal is slightly smaller in size than Indiana. In 2001, Portugal decriminalized drug possession, which precipitated in fewer drug crimes and even fewer drug abuse cases amongst Portugal’s youth. Portugal was one of the world’s leading maritime powers during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. During the early years of the Common Era, Romans bought Portuguese urine as a mouthwash for their dental hygiene. No one knows why the Romans preferred Portuguese urine for their mouthwash, though. The population of Portugal hovers around 10.8 million (2014), making Portugal’s population larger than Georgia but smaller than Ohio. Portuguese has around 230-240 million native speakers worldwide.

What else can we say about Portugal? Hmmmm… That’s right! How could we forget? Portugal also happens to be the location of this year’s Writers’ Retreat. More specifically, ENMU will be going to Lisbon (Lisboa), Portugal this summer from 28 June to 10 July. Check out our official webpage for the Writers’ Retreat.
