ENMU Writers’ Retreat 2015 (Portugal)

ENMU Writers’ Retreat and DISQUIET International are pleased to announce this year’s Lisbon writing workshops. They will take place June 28 to July 10, 2015. Please join us and many of the finest North American and Portuguese writers in Portugal this summer.

2015 Faculty include Mary Gaitskill, Eileen Myles, Sally Ashton, Elaine Avila, Jordan Bass (executive editor, McSweeney’s), David Caplan, Alexander Chee, Erica Dawson, Arthur Flowers, John Frey, Noy Holland, Mikhail Iossel, Leslie Jamison, Cyriaco Lopes, Catherine Tice (associate publisher, The New York Review of Books), Stephanie Timm, Terri Witek. Portuguese writers include Teolinda Gersão, José Luís Peixoto, Jacinto Lucas Pires, Patrícia Portela, Patrícia Reis, Gonçalo M. Tavares, and many more TBA.

THE PROGRAM

The 2015 program will include core workshops in poetry, fiction, memoir & nonfiction, and playwriting, with afternoon workshops on a variety of subjects, including experimental poetry and Portuguese culture. There will also be literary walks, day trips, craft talks with leading editors, manuscript consultations, and readings with North American and Portuguese writers, in one of the world’s most unforgettable cities.

SCHOLARSHIP

Ruidoso Casino and Racetrack is offering a $500 stipend to an ENMU Writers’ Retreat applicant. Please send ten pages of prose or three poems to stefan.kiesbye@enmu.edu to qualify. Deadline is April 15, 2015.

Eastern New Mexico University’s literary magazine, El Portal, offers a venue for the work of writers, artists and photographers. ENMU students, national, and international writers are welcome to submit their original, previously unpublished short stories, plays, poetry and photography. No entry fees are charged. Cash prizes are awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in each category (only ENMU students qualify). El Portal is published each semester at Eastern thanks to Dr. Jack Williamson, a world-renowned science fiction writer and professor emeritus at ENMU who underwrote the publication. El Portal has been published since 1939.
